Hi,

I have a Ford XFlow fitted with twin 40's and have just rebuilt the engine. I've had the car for 3 years now and last season I noticed a strong smell of fuel after a run out, but couldn't really see where it was coming from.

Anyway after the rebuild and clean up I have noticed that fuel was dripping back out of the air filters. On investigation the source seems to be fuel coming back out of the trumpets.

Seems to do it on tick over or when driven hard, although the car ticks over and runs very well.

All help appreciated
Graham

you have either one of several things
1- float level is too high
2- fuel pressure is too high
3- dirt in the needle valve
4- limit needle valve travel to 2mm

Hi Jim,

Thanks for getting back to me,

1- Float level is set at 12mm with plastic floats
2- Just fitted Filter King set at 2.5-3 PSI
3- Must check
4- How do I do this it's way over 2mm

Thanks in advance
Graham

you take the lid of the carb off. you will notice that the float moves up and down for a long way. see the needle valve moving. there is a tab on the back of the float that rests on the back of the needle valve. you can bend that tab to control the float drop and with that the movement of the needle valve.

Hi Jim,

Quick update, I've checked the needle valve for dirt and it's clean, also checked the travel of the needle and that appears to be just under 2mm. However there does appear to be some ware on the needle.

One other thing I noticed, when the car is ticking over, no 3 and no 1 barrels have fuel droplets dripping from a brass port in front of the butterfly. Not sure if this is significant or not.

Cheers
Graham

yes, that is significant. That would tell me that the pump jets are leaking. sometimes the seat where the anti bleed back ball sits becomes pitted/worn/damaged. You need to make sure there is no trash or pitting on the seat. normally, there should only be fuel there when the pump circuit is working or when the engine is at high speed, where the jet is used as high speed enrichment.

hi
i am amzaed to find that someone out there has got the exact same problem as me.
i too have a 1600 xflow running 40dcoe's which also drip fuel.

i found that after running the car that the trumpet socks were dripping with fuel.
i removed the socks and just ran open trumpets but the fuel was still dripping from them.
People suggested that the carbs were too tight on the manifold and that they were causing the fuel to foam from vibration.
People suggsted it was runing way too rich
people said it was just one of those things...
i took it and got it set up on a dyno and this reduced the problems but it is still there sometimes so i have found the responses you have had really useful.
i cant remember what jetts im running but i will look and let you know
cheers
simon

the big question is fuel pump pressure. no more than 3.5 psi

then you have a float level issue or there is something holding the needle valve open.

If you have brass floats, you measure 8.5 mm from the lid of the carb with the gasket in place to the top of the float. Limit the Needle Valve travel to 2mm. If you have a plastic float, measure 12mm from the top of the float to the lid of the carb with the gasket in place. limit the needle valve movement to 2mm.

for jetting
start with
30 choke
130 main
F16 emulsion
180 air
45 pump
45F9 Idle
