I've recently had a 32/34 DMTL fitted to a 1987 Escort 1.4 CVH to replace the original 28/30 DFTM. This was the genuine Webcon replacement kit.
The car starts from cold and runs absolutely fine apart from two niggly problems which were not there with the DFTM:
- Start from cold and run maybe a mile. Stop engine, leave a few minutes, and it's reluctant to restart. Choke doesn't help. but slowly depressing the accelerator whilst cranking gets it to fire up.
- After driving about three miles, it's running fine with no choke, but on coming to a stand at a road junction or in traffic the engine just dies instead of settling to idle speed. It restarts immediately and idles smoothly. Using a very small amount of choke seems to prevent it dying - just enough to bring the choke warning light on but not enough to raise the idle speed. After driving a further three miles or so the problem has gone.
Hot idle speed is set at about 1050 rev/min with no load, dropping to about 1000 with headlights on. It's set a bit high to try to overcome the cutting out.
The Haynes manual indicates that CO should be 1.25% - 1.75% with the DFTM -but it's set at 2.87% with the DMTL. I was told that this should give a better tickover, but would it result in the problems above??
The ignition system is in good order, new coil and plugs, recent rotor arm and distributor cap. The air filter is standard Ford. The DFTM had a throttle sustain system but the DMTL does not.
Any ideas??
