My current full race MGB (apx 170 +BHP) has a 45DCOE on a long intake manifold. Am considering swopping to a 48DCOE to get more power, preferably torque not top end. Any advice, experience on pros and cons?

the only way for more torque is smaller venturies. I think you will get more power with a 48 DCO or 50 DCO but torque will rise in the rpm range.
